Here are two key points. First, not everyone with a weight problem is a weight loss surgical candidate. Second, not everyone who is technically a weight loss surgical candidate should have surgery. Keep these points in mind if you are considering weight loss surgery.
To be a weight loss surgical candidate ideally you would fall into one of two categories based on your BMI:
- If you have a BMI ≥ 40, surgery is usually a good choice; especially if you have failed diets before.
- If your BMI is 35 < ≥ 40 and you have some other medical problems (called co-morbidities) related to your weight such as diabetes, high blood pressure or lung problems surgery may be a helpful choice; especially if you have failed diets before.
If your BMI ≤ 35, surgery is typically not an option; but under very select circumstances your surgeon may consider an operation.
