A common misbelief I hear regarding physical fitness is that you have to block out huge chunks of time for your daily workout. For most people that involves workout time, drive time, costly gym memberships, equipment, and possibly a babysitter. The truth is that none of these are necessary. In just 30 to 45 minutes over the course of your day, you can break your exercises up and fit them into your schedule—and the results are amazing. Here’s my proof!
We all know that exercise can help us to lose weight and build muscle. We also know that regular exercise keeps us physically and mentally healthy, and one of the many health benefits of exercise is a better night’s sleep. People who regularly engage in exercise experience fewer instances of insomnia. Exercise improves sleep quality by allowing smoother and a more regular transition between the cycles and phases of sleep.
In order to lose weight and experience the other benefits of walking, you must walk briskly, several times a week for at least 30 minutes.
It is generally well accepted that exercise burns calories and can increase the overall health of body and mind. Most of us also recognize that walking is one of the simplest and most effective exercises for weight loss and health. What many people don't realize is that they might not be getting the most effective returns on their efforts.
Exercise is an essential part of weight loss. You may be able to lose some weight without exercising, but if you expect to reach your goal weight exercise is going to have to enter into the picture somewhere. Besides helping you lose weight, exercise helps you maintain your health in other ways.
Almost every day I receive this question or a variation of it from readers around the world. In fact, one specific e-mailer asked: “John, I’ve been running six miles a day for the past twelve years. Recently I received your book, Pushing Yourself to Power, and I’ve decided I want to achieve a muscular six-pack waistline. Would it help to speed my abdominal development and fat loss if I increased my daily running to ten miles?”
Sure, you know how to breathe...or do you? And do you know what breathing can do for you...beyond keeping you alive, that is? Did you know that breathing properly can help you burn fat even better than some exercises?
The first essential step in securing radiant health and strength is the deep breathing of pure air. All of the most successful courses on physical culture throughout history made deep breathing the primary vitality building method of exercise. Martin “Farmer” Burns, for example, was the preeminent teacher of catch wrestling in his day (1910s) and is famous for saying, “Deep breathing alone has made many a sick man well, and many a weak man strong.”
In his world-famous bodybuilding course first published in 1922, Charles Atlas prominently featured only one type of push-up. It was the very first exercise of his entire system, and he emphatically stated it was the single most important exercise of all and the preeminent exercise for strength conditioning and physical development. |
