There appears to be no simple solution to prevent this from happening as it is a combination of the environment and genetics together. According to the U.S. Centers of Disease Control the prevalence of diabetes is growing at a rate of 5% per year; some of this from people as a whole gaining weight and some of it in those with normal weight. Diabetes can cause a number of debilitating medical problems such as blindness, heart attacks, strokes, infertility, clogging of the blood vessels of the lower extremities (which can lead to amputations) as well as a host of other medical problems.

Obesity Costs US Health System $147 Billion
Obesity-related diseases account for nearly 10 percent of all medical spending in the United States or an estimated $147 billion a year, U.S. researchers said Monday. They said obese people spend 40 percent more -- or $1,429 more per year -- in healthcare costs than people of normal weight. With all the discussions on health care, overweight and obesity this is a must read article.

Lack of Sleep Leads to Obesity?
Well it is true that there is a trend towards less sleep. Recent studies have shown that over the past few decades the average amount of sleep per night has gone from about 8 down to 7 hours. Decreased sleep may lead to some obvious side effects such as being tired. But is it possible that a lack of sleep may lead to other more serious problems such as obesity?
